Texas Oaks in Wildflowers

About Dancing Light Fused Glass

Donna's love of painting began with her first classes in Bauernmalerie (German Folk Art) in 1995 while she was living in Heidelberg, Germany. After returning to Texas, she taught classes in several art leagues including Brenham and Smithville, and in her home in LaGrange.

In 1999, a move to Washington introduced her to the world of fused glass, and a love affair began with its "painterly" qualities. 2001 brought a move back to Texas, with a stop in Portland just long enough to pick up crates of fusible glass from Bullseye. A studio in Fayetteville gave her space to experiment and explore the range of glass as a palette. Within a year, Donna's art glass was being carried in Clarksville Pottery, Austin, and Hanson Galleries, Houston.

Donna's techniques for florals and landscapes were born out of a desire for texture, dimension, and a unique approach to glass art. Her pieces are multi-layered, multi-fired, and use a wide range of glass both cut and ground. Each piece is her own original design which will never be repeated. These techniques are taught at Dancing Light Fused Glass Studio to glass students who really desire to be challenged and inspired!

In Oct. 2006, John Sarafis and Donna Phillips wed and created Dancing Light Fused Glass Studio in Huntsville. Nestled on 20 wooded acres, this studio is dedicated to creating beautiful glass art and teaching fine classes. John's love of history has led him to create a series of historic Texas flags in glass. Our pieces have been sold in the above galleries, as well as, Eclectic, San Antonio, Linda Watkins Gallery, Conroe, The TVAA Gallery in the Plaza of the Americas, Dallas, and private collections i.e., The Harlan Crow Family, and Crow Holdings

Donna recently (June 2010) won First Place for the "Texas Oaks in the Wildflowers" in the prestigious, international Delphi Glass Festival Competition in the kiln-formed Donnaglass category. Second Place in the San Antonio River Art Show 2009 for a 16" square weave bowl, "The Fabric of Society." First and Second Place in the Woodlands Art League Competition, The Woodlands, TX, 2009, and a Freddy, Best in Division, and First Place in the 1999 Gulf Coast Ceramic Show, Houston, TX, for her painted 9" plate, "English Country Cottage and Garden."

Testimonial from Carole Little - Donna's artistic side is so closely intertwined with her spirituality, by the end of the first day, it was clear that she was not only sharing her talent with me but that she truly cared about me as an individual. I highly encourage anyone looking for a unique, creative and relaxing experience to get in touch with Donna or John to arrange a custom class just like I did. Pretty soon, you too will be creating one of a kind, unique fused glass pieces and the process will assist you in winding down from the daily grind while helping you discover your creative side.
